Why this is a masterpiece:
A beautiful kris from South Sulawesi. Apart from the beauty of both
the hilt and sheath, this kris is special because of its age. It is certain that it dates from the 17th century and it could even have been made earlier. By Dr. Pieter ter Keurs, Curator Insular Southeast Asian Collections, Leiden.
History of the Object:
The kris was part of the collection of Stadhouder William IV (1711-
1751), who was also Head of the Dutch East Indies Company (V.O.C.). Most likely it was a gift of the sultan of Goa to the highest official of the V.O.C. (William IV).
